    Ubuntu should have been nice and mounted that read-write for you.

    hopefully, it is as simple as remounting it with a sudo command.

    first get the mount point. run "df -T" (the T says to show the filesystem) and look in the output for something that looks like your USB disk, e.g.:
    $ df -T
    Filesystem Type 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    rootfs         rootfs     7656360   6708632    563680  93% /
    /dev/root      ext4       7656360   6708632    563680  93% /
    devtmpfs       devtmpfs    508240         0    508240   0% /dev
    tmpfs          tmpfs       508560        24    508536   1% /dev/shm
    /dev/sdb1      vfat        204800      2048    200000   4% /media/USB_DISK
    The last line there is the one of interest. So then I'd do:

    sudo mount -o remount,rw /media/USB_DISK
    Then look in /proc/mounts to see if it "took":

    $ grep USB_DISK /proc/mounts
    /dev/sdb1 /media/USB_DISK vfat rw,nosuid,nodev 0 0
    You can see it is read-write.

    If this fixes it for you, you still want it to mount read-write in the future, when you plug it in. We can hopefully figure that out, but try the remount command first, to see if that is it.
