Check this tutorial, How to install Software in Linux ( post #2 ). Follow instructions from there. If you find any difficulty, post back here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Hello devils casper
I used the command ls and got the following answer.
montana@montana-laptop:~$ ls
Desktop Downloads Music Pictures Templates usr
Documents examples.desktop My GCompris Public Ubuntu One Videos
montana@montana-laptop:~$
The file that I'm trying to install is
/home/montana/Downloads/CorelPHOTOPAINT9Lnx.tar.gz
I see from the information that I read that I have to compile the software from the tar.gz extension. I presume from the above information that the file is in the home directory. It looks different from the one that you show. Mine is in the download folder where it was downloaded to. Do I have to change the location of my file? If so what do I do put it on the desktop and it will be in the home directory. If not on the desktop then how do I put it into the home directory?
I presume all this is done in the terminal.
Thank you for your help.

That is the content of your entire home directory. First, you'll need to cd into Downloads. Verify that your file is there.
Provided it's there, do:Code:ls
You should end up having a new directory... possibly CorelPHOTOPAINT9Lnx or something similar. cd into that one. The next step is either going to be ./configure or make, depending on the software.Code:tar -zxvf CorelPHOTOPAINT9Lnx.tar.gz
After that, you'll need root privileges to actually install. So do:
If all goes well, you're good to go.Code:su - <enter root password> cd /home/montana/Downloads/CorelPHOTOPAINT9Lnx make install
Post any errors that might come up.Jay

From where did you download it? Check CorelPHOTOPAINT9Lnx folder after executing tar command suggest by jayd512. Extracted folder includes install text file having full installation instructions most of the time.

Here is what I've done so far. I don't know what to do next. I see in this the word install but don't know how to use it. Could you let me have the instructions what to do next. Could you let me have it as soon as possible. I don't want to close this down as I wouldn't know how to get it back.
I don't remember where I got this but it was at a site that had a number of programs. I'll try to find out where I got it from.Code:montana@montana-laptop:~$ ls CorelPHOTOPAINT9Lnx.tar.gz Downloads My GCompris Templates Videos Desktop examples.desktop Pictures Ubuntu One Documents You can open up a file manager (Naulitus, Konqueror, Thunar) and double-click the Readme file from there.
