xrandr maximum monitor support (without xinerama)

I have heard that xrandr can only support up to two monitors. I have managed to get three monitors working using two different cards and xinerama, but I really don't like it. By not using xrandr, it simply does not integrate as nicely.

So, suppose I buy a graphics card that does support more than two simultaneous outputs. Would xrandr work with that? I've been googling and simply can't find the answer. Do any of you know?
