Wireless USB adapter Ralink RT2870 on Ubuntu 14.04

I hope I'm not being redundant but here goes. First post here.
I have a Ralink RT2870 wireless USB 802.11 adapter I'm trying to get working on an install of Ubuntu 14.04. I've heard the drivers should already be here but I did a lsmod | grep rt2 and said they weren't installed. Did I check correctly ?
Wow why can't linix be a little more user friendly?
Anyway I downloaded some drivers for the Ralink RT2870 for linix from the Ralink site but I'm clueless about where to go from here.
Thanks for putting up with noob questions.
    Thanks
    Dennis

If the driver and firmware are not in the proprietary driver folder on the system, then go here to see if it is a supported device, and if it is they have links to the driver, firmware, and instructions on how to install them: wireless.kernel.org

Thank you for the reply Rubberman. I looked over the site you told me about. I'm still pretty confused about this stuff.
I found the driver section for the rt2870 but I still can't find the instructions. Someone is going to have to walk me through this.

Here is a link to the firmware: kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git - Repository of firmware blobs for use with the Linux kernel
You might need to use that, but here is where you would get the firmware and driver for Linux from MediaTek directly:
    Firmware: Firmware RT28XX/ RT30XX USB series (RT2870/ RT2770/ RT3572/ RT3070) - MediaTek
    Driver: RT2870USB(RT2870/ RT2770) - MediaTek

I haven't looked at the packaged, but they probably either come with instructions or preferably installation scripts to use. Download them, unpack them, and see what is there. Then post here again when you hit the next wall.

Ok thanks Rubberman. Alright I think I see instructions. Looks like a lot of "C" stuff involved. I am not a programmer in any way shape or form.
Boy this stuff looks like why I gave up on linux 5 years ago.
    What to do ?
Are you sure this driver is not on the distro of Ubuntu 14.04 ?

It may well be. Did you look in the Other Drivers (I think that's what they call it) tab under (I think) either System->Preferences or System->Services or maybe just under the System tab?

Gumby will tell you I am the furthest thing from a programmer. They would throw me out of his office.
Thinking I was there to go postal on him.

Your Kernel should have detected your wireless chip and loaded rt2870.
Did you md5sum check the Ubuntu Iso before you installed it?
    Probably not. Is my guess.
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

You might have a corrupted iso download if md5sum does not match up.
    That will cause wireless issues.

    Hello Rubberman,
I download and unpack firmware and driver. I make and make install in driver file and my "wall" is mistake 1,2 (chyba 1,2) in these terminal reaction.

    :~/2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1$ sudo make install
    make -C /home/ado/Plocha/2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1/os/linux -f Makefile.6 install
mkdir: nie je možné vytvoriť adresár `/etc/Wireless': Súbor existuje
    make[1]: Entering directory `/home/ado/Plocha/2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1/os/linux'
    rm -rf /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA
    mkdir /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA
    cp /home/ado/Plocha/2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1/RT2870STA.dat /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/.
    install -d /lib/modules/3.13.0-39-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
    install -m 644 -c rt2870sta.ko /lib/modules/3.13.0-39-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
install: nie je možné stat() `rt2870sta.ko': Adresár alebo súbor neexistuje

    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/ado/Plocha/2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1/os/linux'
    make: *** [install] Chyba 2

I restarted my laptop (and ejcted battery) and I note, my wifi conection list is duplicite (old and new device work together). Aleluja. Now I use new and faster device.
