This sounds like DNS problem - make sure you have checked DHCP and Router assigns DNS. Don't test on a busy site - then the problem may not be yours ...

Don't test on a busy site - then the problem may not be yours - If you know a personal site with little traffic try that one ..

Well, you mentioned wireless, Linux and wireless have their issues. if it is a wired connection the above comments should work. I just hought I'd mention about the wireless bit...some distros work with it some don't, and its a ***** to get ti to work.

Have fun, it worked great for me Cheers
Thanks to everyone for insights, and taking the time to care about my problem!

This time it looks like the trophy goes to Mr "dark_blue_demon". Thankyou so much dude!!!!

This issue has been shitting me to tears. I disabled the IPv6 in Firefox, and...well.. im writting this on ubuntu. Going to now try apt-get stuff and see if that works.

Again...cheers to all who gave "two stamps of a windows os box" for my problem!

im not trouble free yet... Disabling IPv6 worked wildly for my browser...although gaim and other apps still have connection trouble...at least now i can use the browser to research it while im in the distro...was quite annoying trying things and then swapping to winshit to do more research!

    Internet Problems

    Hi,

I followed this recommendation and it fixed my Firefox problems. However, Synaptic and Pan still don't work.

When I enter: ip a | grep inet6, I still get a response. As I have no idea what this means, I am still looking for help.

    Thanks
    David

Upgrading to Dapper Drake (I think it's Ubuntu version 6.06, unsure of the number...) seemed to solve almost all of my problems. I would definitely recommend it!!!!!

Try this to disable IPV6 across the whole system. The earlier "disable IPV6" directions were for Firefox only.
Scroll down to post #5. It's a little clearer than the first version. If Firefox started working but stuff like gaim is clunky this might do it. Not sure if you have to reboot or not but might not be a bad idea.

When i have come across the "...can't find server ..." problem it is almost always a dns issue.

Ping with an address (ping 192.168.0.1) dosn't use dns so it works great. similarly, the browser dosn't use dns to connect to your router either. The minute you try "www.xxx.yyy" the dns is called upon to resolve the address, and if not set up properly = it fails.
