I need some help to format space that is marked as free. I get a statement can't have more than 4 part. on the drive. Is there a way to take this space and expand it?

You can do anything with GParted LiveCD :

It's true. You can't have more then four primary partitions on a drive. You can have a ton more partitions, though, if you make them extended partitions.
