    GUI troubles in GNOME


    I am using Ubuntu 5.10 on my box. The problem is that whenever I try to use applications like synaptic and other such which require root previledes I am asked to enter the root passwd, which surprisingly is not the root passwd on my system which gives root access via

    . Why is there a discrepency and how can I remove it?

    By the way all these apps when invoked by the terminal (as root) run smoothly without any trouble.
