    installing download

i downloaded a tar.gz program to my kbuntu desktop, then opened terminal an unpacked it but when i do ./configure it says: checking for gcc... no
    checking for cc... no
    checking for cc... no
    checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

    so i tried sudo apt-get install build-essential
    says E: coundnt find package

so i look in adept for gcc it has
    package status
    gcc-3.3-base installed
    gcc-4.0-base installed
    libgcc1 installed

what should i do to install this prog?

Yep, that's the one you need.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install build-essential
    doesn't work?

Which program are you trying to install?
Which version of Kubuntu are you using?
Is your file /etc/apt/sources.list in order (you can post it here if you want, we will make sure it is)?
