    Try
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure synaptic
    perhaps.

Did you try to install them this way?

Installed Ubuntu 3 times on different machines and same result, no working Guis for installing progs, but will give this a go - installed nvidia from 'easy Ubuntu' got blue screen on reboot, should have realised this was dead loss when it could not load fonts, but found out later the workaround to choose video driver! Good practice on recovering partitions though, and got some good stuff from command line. How does anyone imagine that Linux will help the average user, I would get terrible marks on my computer science course if I wrote code with no output for errors. http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif

    Thumbs up ubuntu gui's

Tried reconfigure synaptic, got a flash of a yellow box but that was it! Got Nvidia drivers through easy-ubuntu, and have speeded up firefox,(well it couldn't have been slower!) Other users are reporting same problem with drawers, advising re-install, but many have new problems when doing that. Now wondering if a new desktop might work better, some have fixed probs by compiling, but that's beyond me. Thanks anyhow!
