you could change settings in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

If your monitor is correctly configured to the maximum resolution you can use the krandr applet as a tray icon to quickly switch resolution. You can also use CTRL,ALT and the +/- signs from your number pad to increase/decrease resolution to the configured settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You could just try running 'krandr' in a terminal. If you don't have it (it should already be in kdebase) you can install it using
    Code:
    apt-get install krandr
