direct rendering failure w/o any cause

    i did a server install & then did apt-get dist-upgrade & then apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

all worked beautifully...logged in my system & checked for direct rendering

    glxinfo | grep rendering...

    it showed Yes....

after that i ve only installed
gcc g++ make elinks gkrellm unrar gdesklets gdesklets-data bum 3ddesktop 915resolution

and ve done ctrl + alt + bsp a couple of times & now suddenly my direct rendering has been disabled....

    glxinfo shows!!!

additional to this i ve only Fetched xserver-xgl package not installed..

in xorg.conf i ve only added 32 bit depth subsection..but not using it..& also set the HorizSYnc & VertRefresh acc to my monitor specs

Are you running over an Xgl server? If so glxinfo will never detect direct rendering although it is present. Take a look at and find a post where they help you to create a shell script to run software in a secondary xserver over Xgl (only works in nvidia)
