You might take a look at this site first and see if it answers your questions. I know there's a section for installing Java and DVD Playback specifically.

sounds like you need the help of the all mighty automatix
google for "automatix" and use the very concise installation instruction on the link.
then once its installed you will find its an auto installer for dvd/mp3/wmv/java plus many many more. all you have to do is click on a checkbox for the progs you want and it'll sort it out for you.

    can't believe it didnt work!
what error messages did it give? what method did you try?
there is step by step instructions here:
    http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=177646

its a matter of opening a terminal and typing the commands. (any slight spelling mistake will scupper it though, the terminal is very sensitive)
the first stage is to add whats called a repository (where the software sits on the net)
then you download and install the passcode to access it
then you tell your computer to look in that repo for new software
    then you install automatix.
once its installed its amatter of ticking boxes and it'll run lovely and do all the legwork.
any problems report them back here and be specific. if it doesnt work tell us why it doesnt work and what you've tried.
most importantly, dont give up!! keep at it and you'll learn a lot.
i assume you've just changed from windows so dont expect it to work how windows did, its very different.
remember how long it took for you to learn how windows worked, this is similar!

in the top right ( i assume your using gnome window manager) there should be a little red circle with yellow arrows on it telling you that new software updates are available, use that and it should say a new version is available (ubuntu 6.06 LTS) go for that.
if not you want to google for automatix 5.1 rather than the newest version you have, as that should work on your older version.
if all else fails, try googling for easyubuntu.
it works on same principle but removes the need for the terminal i think..
