I have Xgl installed on my computer and everything runs just fine, but what happens If I update my kernel?, Will I lose 3D acceleration?

depends, if you installed ati or nvidia drivers and how you installed them. i know if you install nvidia drivers manually (using their installer) then it breaks every kernel update.
make sure you've got another gui installed other than gnome (i recommend fluxbox
-sudo apt-get install fluxbox) then you can get another driver and avoid using links and wget from console.You know, aliens are going to come to earth in 50 years and kill the hell out of us for DDoSing their networks with this SETI crap
