Ubuntu boot disk not working
Ok, so I've downloaded the Ubuntu open CD file and read through the "BurningIsoHowto" guide on ubuntu.com; I burned 6 different ISO CDs with the Ubuntu open CD file on it in different boot formats(?), but none of them are working. Here are each of the types of boot disks I burned: Floppy1_28MB, Floppy1_44MB, Floppy2_88MB, HardDisc, No emulator, and a non-bootable disc. The only one that seems close to working is the Floppy1_44MB disc, but whenever I reboot my computer with it in the CD drive, it only comes up with DR-DOS or something like that. None of the other CDs will do anything when they're in the CD drive and I reboot. Have I burned the CD wrong? and/or what do I need to do?? Please help! Email me at kbsuperstar@gmail.com (preferrable), or repost on this thread. Thanks!

It looks like you are trying to make a bootable CD, rather than burning the ISO and letting it as is.Can you post the link to the howto please? If you are using and of the major CD burning apps, just choose 'Burn image' or 'Burn ISO'. There shouldn't be much more to it than that. I would recommend maybe downloading the md5 file that comes with your Ubuntu download so you can check to see if it is intact.

The guide for burning an ISO file is here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
I am using CDBurner XP Pro 3, and when you burn an ISO file you can choose whether or not it is a bootable disc. I've burned a disc with everyone of the the choices (Floppy1_44MB, HardDisc, etc.). I also burned a "non-bootable" disc with the same Ubuntu file(s) on it. Other than that, I don't know what to do.

That's a problem right there. You shouldn't have any options with ISO burning as it literally is a snapshot of the disc as it should be. Something I've seen before so I have to ask - ISO files are treated as archives by some programs such as Winrar. Have you 'extracted' the ISO? It should be left intact and burned as is.

Wow, I just realized my mistake! When I downloaded the ISO file from ubuntu.com, I didn't save it to my PC, I simply opened it with WinRAR and extracted all of its contents to a folder; I then tried to burn all the contents that I had extracted onto a CD as a bootable disk. So now, I'm redownloading the ISO file and saving it, as is, to my computer, then I'll burn that to a CD and I think it'll work. Thanks for the quick help (you responded less than 10 min after I posted!)!!!

Ok, so I got the ISO file written onto a CD and I successfully ran Ubuntu for the first time! When I had it loaded, I went to "Install" or whatever and went through all the steps up to the Hard Drive partition(?). I had started partitioning my 30 GB internal HD (only 3 GB free space left) and it took too long, so I decided to cancel the partition so that I could partition my external HD instead (75 GB free space). After cancelling the partition of the internal HD, I rebooted and tried to start Ubuntu again. Now it won't load and it keeps freezing everytime I try to start Ubuntu (but I can successfully load Windows). Right now I'm running the memory test to see if that will help, but I'm not sure if it will. I think the problem is that part of my internal HD is partitioned for Ubuntu and that it keeps trying to use that memory to boot up Ubuntu. Anyway to get around this?? Or anything at all I should do??? Thanks!!!

I'm having the same problem. I try to make a disc that is non-bootable and it won't load, I have my CD rom selected to boot first. The file on my CD that I downloaded is ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386
