    hi mannu !!

    you can use command line (Terminal) or GUI (windows) to install....
    open Terminal.....
    $ tar -xzf <file>.tar.gz
    or right click on file and extract it...
    you will get a folder having same name as of .tar.gz file...
    open that folder and read README file... in most cases you have to configure the file...
    $ ./configure
    (you must be in the same folder...)
    $ make
    $ sudo make install

    your package is installed now........

    Why use tar's when you can use deb files? With the amount of software available for Debian based systems, most programs provided by source are available via the APT package manager. Just be sure to uncommend the universe package repositories with the conf file and use apt-get to install and remove your applications. If you want to learn how to unpackage and compile from source, then do a search for tar using the search feature found within this forum.
