anyway for tar.gz files read README file to see how to install it.

for most tar.gz files you will have to do next:

    cd /path/to/file
    tar -xvf package.tar.gz
    to install it:

    sh configure
    sudo make
    sudo make install
    i hope that helps

ok, I downloaded the .rpm file for Winamp 3, sucessfully converted it into a .deb, then installed it, just like you guys said... now I can't find the program in my application menu, nor can I type

    shanlek@Kevin:~/Desktop$ Winamp

into the terminal and have winamp open. Basically its installed but won't run.

    Help please,
    Thanks

    I can type in

    :~$ Winamp
    :~$
and absolutly nothing happens... the Winamp window doesn't open, and I don't get an error message. The terminal just gives me a new line.

i installed Winamp and its not working in my machine too. something is wrong in this package. i will look into this. meanwhile, you can install 'xmms' through Synaptic. its Linux version of Winamp and supports Winamp skins too.
