messed up my gamma now screen all screwed up

I tried adjusting my gamma in kubuntu thinking it would make screen less bright and more stable like my xp screen(I dual boot and at various times my kubuntu screen will bounce and the bottom half would be unreadable...only after moving the screen does it work but the bouncing is still there... in xp my screen is stable)

so in adjusting my gamma from whatever it was(2.0 or something) i moved it to 1.4 it said x-something had to rebooted so i rebooted my system...load went ok then i got to the terminal login in page(long story) entered my info then sudo kdm then password and the kubuntu login page was all messed up...it was covered in line static and i was unable to read it the mouse was barely noticable.

So here is my problem...how can i reset the gamma via terminal?

is it sudo kgamma to start?

if so what do i type to change the 1.4 to whatever it was?

    please anyone?

You can change the gamma value by editing the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

    To edit it :
    Code:
    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    (case sensitive).

You should have a Section "Monitor" like that in it :
    Section "Monitor"
    [...]
    Gamma gamma_value
    [..]
    EndSection
So just set gamma to an acceptable value (default is 1.0). Save the file and reboot.

Can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file ?
As well as your video card model.

posting the xorg.conf file will be a problem...i cant access it via linux i can see it in windows b/c of a program i found but windows has no way to read it...not sure if i can upload it maybe as an attachment?

and i keep seeing VESA as my video card...but really have no idea, windows doesnt list it just says unknown and when i was in kubuntu i never said either.

do u know anything i can use in windows to make my xorg file viewable so i can make it a text file and upload or copy it?

You can send your xorg.conf as an attachment (just rename it xorg.conf.txt).

Also, if you don't know your video card model, then post the output of
    Code:
    lspci | grep -i vga

Unfortunately we can't do anything if you don't post your exact video card model : output of
    Code:
    lscpi | grep -i vga
Anyway, the simplest way to reconfigure X is this one :
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
