    Default Username

    Hi,

I just installed ubuntu and I'm wondering what the default user name is?

I put my password in during the install but it never asked for a user name.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

The installer should have asked you what you wanted your user name to be. Did you put in root's password or your user name's password? Try executing these commands:
    Code:
    $cd ~
    $pwd
    What do you get?

If one can't login because one can't remember the default username, how then?

NO unless you select OEM installation.

in that case, you have to boot up from Ubuntu LiveCD, mount / (root) partition and look into /home folder or /etc/passwd file.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

When I installed Ubuntu 6.06 alt, I must have selected oem (I don't remember). I was attempting to login in but could not remember my username (oem). I booted to the alternate boot configuration and got a bash prompt of 'root@dlinknet'. Not knowing bash commands, I finally typed 'cd /home' and found a directory of 'oem'. Hello as the lights began to flash, I remember the default.

I didn't want to reinstall as I have bootmagic handling windows xp and ubuntu. But I see that the livecd would not have changed things.

    Thanks for the info.
