    Exclamation Won't allow 1024x768 resolution

i recently switched to ubuntu from windows xp. after getting it running i was able to get all the bugs worked out except for the resolution. I have a ViewSonic VG150 monitor with NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] graphics card. It appears that the xorg.conf allows resolutions besides 800x600 and 640x480 but thats all that the resolution changer will allow. The monitor section of xorg.conf is:

    Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]"
    Driver "nv"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "VG150"
    Option "DPMS"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]"
    Monitor "VG150"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 1
    Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 4
    Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 8
    Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 15
    Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection

I would appreciate any assistance as i don't want to return to windows but can't stand the novelty sized icons and windows

backup your xorg.conf and change the section "screen" like this

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]"
    Monitor "VG150"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 1
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 4
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 8
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 15
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection

then try to restart your x. i think it will work.

if it doesn't work (perhaps frequency over range), try this:

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]"
    Monitor "VG150"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 1
    Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 4
    Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 8
    Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 15
    Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
