    Problems with gcc when running configure

    Hi guys,

    I have newly installed Ubuntu, and I'm a returning Linux User (previously Solaris 7). You can say I'm a new user.
    I wanted to install emacs, but when I ran the configure command I got this error:

    error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.

    I read previous threads and forums. Some suggested downloading a new copy of gcc, and some suggested downloading the gcc-g++. So I did both. The gcc-g++ did not solve the problem, not for the C or C++ compiler not able to create executables.

    When trying to install the new gcc (4.1.1), I had to run the configure, and that too yielded the same problem.

    Here's what I get:

    root@LinAMY:/usr/local/src/emacs-21.4# ./configure
    loading cache ./config.cache
    checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1
    checking for gcc... gcc
    checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
    configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.

    and the config.log:

    root@LinAMY:/usr/local/src/emacs-21.4# more config.log
    This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
    running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

    configure:759: checking host system type
    configure:1753: checking for gcc
    configure:1866: checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works
    configure:1882: gcc -o conftest conftest.c 1>&5
    /usr/bin/ld: crt1.o: No such file: No such file or directory
    collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    configure: failed program was:

    #line 1877 "configure"
    #include "confdefs.h"

    main(){return(0);}

    Can someone please come to my rescue? Any Suggestions?
