    Kubuntu to Ubuntu Network

How would I create a network between 2 computers - The main one with Kubuntu and the secondary with Ubuntu?

I just want to be able to share files (and possibly sound).
I have a crossover cable between the two.

I went and checked my computers' network, and when I look under network places on my ubuntu computer, it shows the "windows network" and there's nothing in the windows network. Because I don't have a router should I make a static IP address for both like in Windows, or leave it to be assigned by DHCP?
