How do I change to widescreen resolution?

I recently got a new wide screen monitor with a resolution of 1680x1050 but when i go:

    system>>preferences>>screen resolution

it does not provide that resolution as an option

i am using an fx5500 graphics card

i had a similar problem on my widescreen laptop and i fixed it by doing this:

    sudo apt-get install 915resolution

but i tried that and it did not work,

it there a similar command i can used to solve the problem this time round?

check Monitor's Manual for supported HorizSync, VertiRefresh rates and Resolutions. open terminal and execute this
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
this command will ask a lot of questions. accept default option. enter correct HorizSync, VertiRefresh rates when prompted. it will show a list of available Resolutions too. select supported resolutions.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
