check your Monitor's Manual for supported HorizSync, VertiRefresh rates and Resolutions.
open Terminal ( OR press Alt+Ctrl+F1 and login in text mode ) and execute this
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
this command will ask you a lot of questions. accept default options and enter correct HorizSync/VertiRefresh rates when prompted. select supported resolutions in the list. reboot machine.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
