problem in the add/remove application and at startup

at the startup, i can choose from 4 or more options for linux, the two on the top are the most recent (there is one is safe mode).
well, when i start it i get an error...
i think the problem was caused because
i ran the add remove program, got word that i needed 139 updates, i downloaded them and was in the middle of installing. Is there any way to fix this???

other problem, say i try to add any program from the add/remove program list.
i enter my password and then get this error:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

sadly being very bad with computers and such, i dont know how to do this
    help!

    post error message here.

    execute this
    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
