Doing more research I typed in Ctrl-Alt-F1
I then typed in this sequence

    sudo init 3
    sudo sh nvidia.run

    I got this error message

You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING
THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver
download page at Welcome to NVIDIA - Graphics, Motherboard, Drivers, PC, Laptop.

Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find
suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available
on the Linux driver download page at Welcome to NVIDIA - Graphics, Motherboard, Drivers, PC, Laptop.

To kill the X server in Ubuntu (or any Debian distribution) use this command instead:

    Code:
    /etc/init.d/gdm stop
    This comes from my tutorial:

Wow thanks that worked but now I got another error in so many words the terminal told me that I need to compile the kernel so that it can make room for nvidia and I don't know how to do that in Ubuntu.

    i had this problem

    what you have todo is...

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    then choose the NV driver

once you have doine that it should work then i used

    Automatix software http://www.getautomatix.com/

to install the nvidia driver and it works perfectly!

    then the sound problem...

add the acpi=off in the following

    ## ## Start Default Options ##
    ## default kernel options
    ## default kernel options for automagic boot options
    ## If you want special options for specific kernels use kopt_x_y_z
    ## where x.y.z is kernel version. Minor versions can be omitted.
    ## e.g. kopt=root=/dev/hda1 ro
    ## kopt_2_6_8=root=/dev/hdc1 ro
    ## kopt_2_6_8_2_686=root=/dev/hdc2 ro
    # kopt=root=/dev/sda1 ro acpi=off

    #### DELETED STUFF #####

    ## ## End Default Options ##

    title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-26-686
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-26-686 root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet splash acpi=off
    initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.15-26-686
    savedefault
    boot
    then the sound should work

OK I think that nvidia is installed because the screen comes up when I get into Ubutnu.

djbenny I don't understand how to install the sound drivers (I don't know what you are saying in your quote).

Also When I type lspci nvidia still shows up as an unknown driver and the hardware info still shows up as an unknown driver what does that mean?

well you have to edit the menu.lst in the boot/grub folder to add the acpi=off like the quote:

and to configure the drivers goto applications then system tools there should be a nvidia application.

Could you explain how to get sound because I didn't understand what you meant by that.

Also how do you add acpi=off in the grub folder.
