Just thought I'd post to check, I know it is simple but you might want to try using the mixer from the command line and checking that the volume was turned up on the speakers, if your sound card is recognized fine then this might be the problem. The command is alsamixer (tho it depends on which sound interface you use). It may be different in ubuntu but that is how it works in fedora.
