Installing Nvidia Drivers (new with linux)

I just installed Ubuntu and did all my updates, for the second time. I've been trying to get the latest nvidia drivers but I've been having difficulties. I'm completely new with linux so I don't really understand all the terms and commands and all that stuff.

The only instructions I've seen on how to do this is to go to System-> Administration-> Restricted Drivers Manager. Then enable the Nvidia driver. I do that much, then it tells me I have to re-boot so I do. Normally when I start Ubuntu from the Dual boot menu, it starts the Linux Kernel, then my monitor shuts off for about 10 seconds and when it comes back on my Log-in screen is there.

However, every time I try to get the driver working, my monitor never comes back on during the boot process. In order to fix this and get back into Ubuntu, I have to re-boot in Recovery mode and edit my xorg.conf file by scrolling down to where it says device and deleting the "idia" part of the Driver where it says "Nvidia."

When I re-boot Ubuntu normally after doing this, it works fine. I read something else that says I need Beryl, so I opened my terminal and typing "sudo apt-get install beryl beryl-manager emerald-themes" to install it, although I wasn't sure what to do after that.

I have a x64 comp running a x64 edition of Feisty 7.04

Any hep would be greatly appreciated. This has been driving me insane for a few days now. If anyone chooses to help me keep in mind I am extremely new to all of this and have only ever logged approx 45-50 minutes of Linux use in my whole life.

No sure you don't need beryl to get Nvidia card working (it's only for effects) ,do you have the driver,did you download it from the nvidia site ,if yes all what you need it's the gcc and the kernel devel package.

What specific kind of 64-bit CPU do you have? There are two different drivers for 64-bit chips. One is for the AMD64/Intel Core/Intel Core Duo (all of which are X86_64 architecture.

The other, which is the one linked by aliov above is for the Intel Itanium processor only.

Yes you right ,this is the link for 64 bit processor (not the itanium one) ,most probably he has AMD or intel core or duo------64 bit
