Installation through source
I have used Linux (Fedora, SUSE, Gentoo) for over three years now, and this is the first time I have used a Debian distro. I have many installers (src /tar.gz) available with me. Are they of any use here? Because when I type ./configure I get the error gcc found....no (etc.), although I have gcc installed. Please help me?

The easiest way to set your system up to install from source is by installing the following package through either synaptic or commandline:
By commandline type:
You might have done this already, i don't know, but its usually the easiest way to set the system up for building from source.
sudo apt-get install build-essential
