[SOLVED] Get modem to work

Hello All
Happy New Year!
I am having a problem with a modem that I'm trying to use with Ubuntu 10.04 I have been updating Ubuntu so everything is updated.
I'm using a USB Modem brand Zoom 56K series 1063. I know that it should work with Ubuntu as it was working with this Ubuntu when I had installed Ubuntu in Windows. I finally made a separate partition and reinstalled it. Now I am trying to get it to work again before my son installed it for me.
I installed Gnome PPP which is a dialup tool from what I understand. When I dial out I get a light on the OH side but not on the data side and then it disconnects me.
I went to system -> adminsration-> users and groups -> advance settings, and I checked use modem. When I click on connect it says connecting but it doesn't connect it goes back to the same window when I click connect. Went to setup -> detect.
Sorry for all the information but figured more you had the easier it would be to tell me what I'm doing wrong.
I'm a newbie so please make any instructions simple although I do know how to use the terminal.

Post these codes into a terminal (command line) window and post back all your results please.

Perhaps you should talk to your son and ask if he needed extra drivers for the modem or if it just worked out of the box.

That sounds like it would be either
- A Windows install, running a VM
- Windows install, with Ubuntu/Wubi installed
Either way, it would basically use your Windows drivers. More technical explanations are available, though.:D

Just to make sure we don't get confused here.
You were connected at the library, on your own machine, correct? How did you connect at the library? I'm guessing you used Ethernet and you want the modem for other places.
Is this a USB modem? Can you please, post the output of

I was connected with wifi at the library. I am using a USB Modem for other places.
I thought that since my son installed the modem with out using a driver which was provided by windows as you pointed out and I didn't think of that. I have since installed a driver for Debian used that one since Ubuntu is based on Debian from what I have heard. I got the modem working in fact I'm on line now with you.
