wine and amd64 and ubtuntu 12.10

Hi I would seriously like to install wine but when I run the command

sudo apt-get install wine

I get this:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine : Depends: wine1.5 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

When I install from the software center I get this.
Package dependencies cannot be resolved

This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time.


Any sugestions, I have tried googling but havent had much luck for the stuff I've found. I love ubuntu but I need some of my Windows programs (spotify, Itunes, few games) Thanks, all help is highly appreciated.

Does it make a difference if you specify the stable version (1.5 is beta)?

You could always recompile from source, too...

It did not work, I'm not allowed to post urls,@ or ftp's until 15 posts or more. or else I would have put the results. It was the same thing with the wine 1.5. unmet dependencies or whatever. Could you show me a guide to recompile from the source. or anyother fixes?

You can get around that temporarily by using hxxp and the like.

Sure, but before that, I think you should try one more thing - it really is best to try and use the distro package manager to install software the native way when possible. But if that fails, absolutely should you go the recompile from source path.

So try this:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.5

Thank you, I run the first command and get this:
cody@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
[sudo] password for cody:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

I will try to restart and try the command again. I guess I should mention that I downgraded to 12.04. Same result for the apt-get wine. Sorry I didn't mention that earlier. Thanks again I really appreciate this.

nevermind, I got the code to work. I had software updates running in the background I'll let you know the results.

Do you mean you went from 12.10 to 12.04 somehow? Yeah, that might booger things up all right.
