Sometimes you can get the .deb files (for Debian/Ubuntu/Mint distributions) and use apt-get to install them, or .rpm files (for Red Hat distributions) to install with yum. However, if these aren't available, then you will have to build the package from source, which sometimes may not work because of system dependencies that you don't have. Usually these problems can be overcome, not not always trivially.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
