    Mandriva and wine

Why can I not get wine 0.9.3 to fuction well with Mandriva 2006, when I get it to function with other distros such as SuSE 10.0 and Fedora Core 4.

To abandon Windows XP I do need to be able to access my old wk4-files. Actually did get Lotus 123 from SmartSuite 97 to work with Fedora, but not in a stable way, so I went for Excel 97, which works perfectly and has filters for wk4-files, using winetools to install. But not with Mandriva. The setup.exe just wouldn´t do anything. Actually tried quite a few other programs with winetools that would not install on Mandriva: UltimateZip, Excel 97 viewer, PowerPoint 97 Viewer to mention a few. However, Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 installed wioth Mandriva and so did PowerPoint viewer 2003!

Why does Mandriva not like wine?

Made a fresh Madriva installation and as first thing installed wine 0.9.5. When trying to install Excel 97 I get these error messages

    [krister@localhost disk1]$ wine install.exe
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 000a), starting debugger...
    err:seh:EXC_DefaultHandling Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7faa3b93

Next I applied the suggestions in Frank´s corner to install Excel 97 and get this long debug message:

    [krister@localhost disk1]$ WINEDLLOVERRIDES="odccp32=n" wine INSTALL.EXE
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x7fdd1a0a at address 0x11df:0x0000001a (thread 000a), starting debugger...

If the apps you mentioned are that important, I'd check out using either Crossover Office or Win4Lin. Both are reasonably priced. Crossover will run some of the apps you mention better than regular Wine. Win4Lin will likely run all of them without problems.

Edit: Here's Crossover's list of Windows apps under their Wine...

Thanks Dan, but I'd rather not spend money one something when I know it works with SuSE 10.0. Have no other desire to use windows programs on Linux, so why will it not work with Mandriva?
