First time using anything linux I installed ubuntu on my system all works fine. Im trying to install wine and am totally lost on what i need etc....

A search for wine in synaptic should bring up a list of packages, including on e that just says "wine." That's a meta-package that will automatically select all the packages you need, so select that and install it.
Once it's installed, most of you work with it will probably start out on the command line. You'll need to navigate to the directory that contains a Windows program you want to run, then typereplacing foo.exe with the name of your program.Code:wine foo.exe
Stand up and be counted as a Linux user!
