I am not sure what happend but this is an old problem for me. After installing a font package to get other fonts working it must have broke something else. For example I was just trying to install warcraft 2 BNE. The text box that pops up to enter the CDkey has no text in it and the text boxes are vertically squished. you can type into the text boxes but you dont see a thing. Also this happens in total commander as well. Is wine somehow falling back on X fonts? Here is an example:
