program location

I tried to use wine to install a windows program under Xubuntu. It didn't work very well and I think the problem may be program location. Will wine chose its own directories to install the necessary files? If so, what does one do when the windows installation program prompts for a location to install and sets a default which is different from where wine wants to put it?

Wine creates a directory at ~/.wine (/home/<user>/.wine). In there, wine sets up a layout of a windows system. So, if you install something in Program Files, it will be located at ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files. Wine will not force you to put anything anywhere.

By the way, what are you trying to install? There may be an open source alternative.

The program I want to install is called Home Budget. I looked around a bit for a package but found none.

When I do the install, the default location is - obviously - c:\Program Files\HB. Does this mean if I leave the default, it will install at /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/HB. If I change the default location in the installation process and select say /home/user/software/, will it then install on /home/user/software/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/HB?

If the install defaults to C:\Program Files\HB, then it will install to /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/HB

You can then run the installed binary with wine.
