Fullscreen games in WINE + DirectX

I'm running Diablo 2 (demo) in WINE on Ubuntu 5.04. The problem is when I start the game, the GNOME panel doesn't go away. It covers up the bottom part of the game. Is there a way to stop them from displaying?

Can I use DirectX 9 in WINE? I've got the installer but it just won't install DirectX for some reason.

Which version of Windows does WINE emulate by default? Can it be made to look like WinXP?

Wine and DirectX are not good together. Try Cedega for gaming.

I'm in the same situation as you, I cannot get Cedega, for it costs money. It's true it is not that expensive, but for guys like me, it's beyond reach. (I only make $14.00 usd the month... common salary inCuba)

Been there, done that. The OpenSource version of Cedega is called WineX, which doesn't seem to work on my Ubuntu 5.10. :(

WineX was the original name of the commercial product made by Transgaming that is now officially called Cedega. The name change happened somewhere around version 4.0 IIRC. I would suppose reason the CVS source is still called WineX is that it's based on the product from a few versions back.
