Just because you use a distribution, doesn't mean everyone uses the same one.
There is no need to login to the GUI as root!

Unplugged land line and got the disconnected banner in Network manager icon. I replugged it in.

Ok, so it looks like NetworkManager is preventing you from manually connecting using iwconfig, so you will either have to use NetworkManager or uninstall it and use the network tool.
I hate that ubuntu does this.
Now, we have to figure out why NetworkManager isn't picking up your wireless card correctly.
I am on my ubuntu computer in my garage now, but am attempting to remove NetworkManager completely so I may be in-and-out so to speak. I will look around to see what I can find in a few though. All I can tell you right now is to get on google and do some searching for "Network Manager Intel 2915 Ubuntu" and that may get you somewhere.

I saw a thread where it said install fwcutter from synaptic package manager. its for extracting broadcom 43xx firmware. I am not going to install till I hear from you.

This is what Network manager says with the land line plugged in. I cant pull this up though with the land line disconnected because connection information becomes greyed out the minute I disconnect land line.

Gruven, I think this is a good link to solve my problem but I don't know what tar file to download and after downloading it how to install. Couls you please look at it.
