| Cant get wireless to work I guess I'll try here. I have a Acer Extensa that I am trying to get Zenwalk up and running on. My only issue at this point is that I can't connect to the internet in any way. I would love to get at least my wireless up and running. Any suggestions?
when I run lspci I see that I have a broadcom BCM94311MCG wlan mini-pci (rev 01)
I have been searching the internet for answers, have tried ndiswrapper, but somehow flubbed that up, also tried installing firmware but to no avail. I can'e even get the blinky light to come on. I have been working on this for a few days. frustration is setting in. looking at the woodstove, thinking acer might burn well....
thanks to any and all who might have some insight. |

| You must be running an older version of Linux, because here is the Broadcom driver that is loading: Code: Module Size Used by
bcm43xx 385696 0
This driver is not very good, and has been replaced by the much improved b43 driver. Before the b43 driver was developed, it was recommended to use NDISwrapper, which I see is also loaded: Code: Module Size Used by
ndiswrapper 127684 0
You can't have both ndiswrapper and bcm43xx loaded at the same time. the wireless will not work. I will first recommend installing a newer version of Linux. If that is not an option, then remove the bcm43xx module with this command (as root): Code: modprobe -r bcm43xx
You then must permanently prevent it from loading. Open the file /etc/modules.d/blacklist (as root) and add this to the bottom:

| Code: "bcm43xx: Error: Microcode ""bcm43xx_microcode5.fw"" not available or load failed."
The native Linux drivers bcm43xx and b43 need firmware loaded to work. Since you are not going to use this driver, this error will stop.

| I think I said in my original post, I tried to install the firmware. that didn't seem to work, so I tried ndiswrapper as a last resort (I don't like the idea of it if I can avoid it) that also didn't work. that's probably why you see both of them competing. I did the modprobe thing to remove the bcm43xx, but when I tried the blacklist line, it came back with "command not found"
I am kind of in a bind, as I am leaving town tomarrow, and it is my wife's computer that I am trying to get going. on the other hand, it isn't too big of a deal, as she is leaving town as well.
So, I am a little lost overall. If i do what you say, I loose the firmware/integrated instalation, and head in the direction of ndiswrapper? I would rather go the other way, unless it is problematic.
Funny thing is, I am using this as sort of a guinea pig to find out if I can cope with linux, and if so, I will switch this machine over. I hate windows, always have since the days when dos went to windows. looking for some encouragement.

| The blacklist directions are not a command. It must be inserted into the blacklist file. Depending on the Linux version you are running it could be in a different folder. Look for one of these:
/etc/modules.d//blacklist
or
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
or anything similar in the /etc/ folder
As long as you remove the bcm43xx module, the ndiswrapper module should work. You need to have installed a working WinXP driver using NDISwrapper. Then configure it as a new network card. If it still doesn't work, try a different WinXP driver. It has to be one made for your wireless chipset. Take a look at the NDISwrapper wiki for other cards with the same chipset. Try the drivers that they list as working. NDISwrapper
I checked for you, and found only one entry: Quote: - Card: Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG
- Chipset: Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI (rev 02)
- pciid: 14E4:4311
- ndiswrapper: version 1.52
- Distro: Ubuntu 8.4 desktop (kernel: 2.6.24-16-generic)
- PC: HP pavillon dv2000
- Driver: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34152.exe
- other: unload module ssb and bcm43xx
| Take note where it says to also unload the ssb module. I'm not sure if this is needed, as it may have undesirable consequences.
Edit: If the driver is a .exe file, as the one linked to above is, you must extract it before NDISwrapper can use it. You need the .inf and .sys driver files for NDISwrapper to use. Read these instructions for extracting the files: NDISwrapper
