Hello all,

I am trying to set up wireless on an older IBM PC with FreeSpire as the operating system. I have played with FreeSpire a bit and am looking to make the jump off of Vista. I am quite comfortable that this can replace both of my MS boxes but before I take the final jump I need to get the wireless working on this PC ( and learn how it is done ) for my nephew.

I have tried to follow other posts on using ndiswrapper with either of my MS driver ( sis163u or rtl8187b ) but the driver never installs properly - I get this : : rtl8187b : invalid driver!

It looks like the sis163u driver is the one you want to use. NDISwrapper uses the .inf and .sys files from the driver. If the driver is a .exe or .cab file, they must be extracted first.

For a list of the NDISwrapper commands, use the --help option:
Remember, you must have root privileges to install kernel modules like NDISwrapper.

thanx, I have been trying to install the drivers and I have used :

sudo ndiswrapper -i /home/erikm/windriv/sis163u.inf

and this is what happens ;

erikm@EriksPC:~$ sudo ndiswrapper -i /home/erikm/windriv/sis163u.inf
installing sis163u ...
couldn't open /home/erikm/windriv/sis163u.inf: No such file or directory at /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper-1.9 line 174.
erikm@EriksPC:~$ sudo ndiswrapper -i /home/erikm/windriv/sis163u.inf
driver sis163u is already installed


but it always comes back looking like this when I do a :

sudo ndiswrapper -l

sis163u : invalid driver!

Can you please let me know what I am doing wrong. I do think I have all of the commands from other posts but don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Try removing the driver with the -r option, and then re-install it.
Try downloading the driver again, maybe something is wrong with the driver you have. Also try re-installing NDISwrapper, and get the newest version.

Thank you very much.

I had downloaded the latest ndiswrapper and Freespire told me I already had the latest. The drivers I was using were from the original disk ( thought they were good ! ) . As you suggested I removed my bad one, downloaded new drivers, reinstalled them and now it recognizes the card. I will continue on and see if I can't get it working now.
