    Wireless switch not working

    My wireless was working yesterday but after restarting my computer it stopped working. I reinstalled the driver but I still can't connect. I'm now assuming that it has something to do with my wireless switch, because the light stays orange (disconnected) no matter what position the switch is in. I've read that I could turn the switch back on in Windows, but I don't have Windows anymore. Any ideas?
    Also, I have Ubuntu 8.10.

    More info on the wireless is needed. Is it USB or PCI/PCIe/PCMCIA?

    If it is USB, enter this command, and post the output.
    Code:
    lsusb
    If you have trouble running any of these commands, try using sudo. Please post the entire output of all the commands, no matter how large it is.

    If it is a PCI/PCIe/PCMCIA card, enter this command and post the output.
    Code:
    lspci -nn
    Run this command to show the modules loaded on your system. Post it too.
    Code:
    lsmod
    Use this command to display the system messages. The output is very large, but I need to see all of it.
    Code:
    dmesg
    There are ways to determine the state of the switch, and also to change it. I am just learning about this, so you can be my guinea pig.

    Not to jump the gun here, but enter this command and post the output.
    Code:
    cat /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state
    This will output either a 0 or 1, meaning the wireless is this:

    0 = off
    1 = on

    Post the output that you got, even if you get an error.

    This is the cat /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state command output:
    cat: /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state: No such file or directory

    It's a built-in card, so I'm not sure what other commands to run.

    That last message says to check the system log. That can be found in the /var/log folder.

    Even if this is a problem with the switch, I don't believe NDISwrapper can handle it. That is one reason to use the Linux driver for wireless, when one is available. I don't see a Linux driver loading, did you blacklist a driver when you installed NDISwrapper?

    I need the device information to determine if there is a Linux driver available. Since we don't know if it is attached to the USB or PCI bus, give me the output of both of these commands.
    Code:
    lspci -nn
    Code:
    lsusb

    I ended up reinstalling Windows. It may suck up ram but it works for what I need it for.
    Thanks for your help though. I had installed the Windows driver with NDISwrapper the day before my wireless stopped working so I'm assuming that I had also blacklisted the Linux driver at the same time.

    That's your decision, although not one that is popular around here.

    You never gave me the info that I needed to help you with this. I hope you give Linux a try again, and allow us to help next time.
