Hello,
First off, I'm extremely new to linux, but have some knowledge of computers in general.

I recently installed ubuntu 8.10. I'm on my second usb wireless card. The first one would see my wireless network, but wouldn't connect. The new one (Trendnet wireless G adapter, model TEW-424UB) will actually connect to my network. I can get my connection speed (54 MBPS), and an IP address on my network, but when I open my web brower, I cannot access any internet sites. The card and router work fine. I'm using the computer I'm speaking of now (using win xp) to access this forum.

Any ideas?

First, make sure that the driver is actually correctly installed. Go to this section:

System --> Administration --> Hardware Drivers

If there is a wireless driver listed, make sure that there is a check in the "Enabled" box. You need to have a wired connection to enable a new driver, as it will download it and then install it.

There are no drivers listed. If it was a driver error, wouldn't it not connect at all?

Not necessarily. Some Linux driver are not 100% open source, so only the open source part of the driver is installed. This gives the wireless the appearance of functioning, but not connecting.

You may want to try the other wireless again. Insert it before boot, and look for the driver again, in the same section as before.

Otherwise, we will have to sort this out the manual way. Read through my post that I linked to below. Post the output of the commands it says to run, here in this thread.

Make sure that the wireless that you want to use is plugged in before you run the commands.

I have no idea how to ping. Also, I just figured out how to post all of those outputs without being connected to the internet. So, I will be doing that soon.

when it says that you are connected, open a terminal and type the following:

ping Google

see if it times out on you or if it is able to ping (it'll spit out some information if you can ping, to cancel it once it starts hit cntrl+c, otherwise it'll ping indefinitely I believe).

I don't know about it damaging your card. That's a new one to me.

The at76_usb needs firmware to work, and it appears to be loading it. It is only a B wireless card though. You can try a fresh version of the firmware, if you like. More info on that diver can be found here:

You may also read through the rtl8187 web site for info on getting that one to work. I don't think that it needs firmware installed. Since it is already in your kernel, you shouldn't need to compile the driver, unless you want to try the latest version.
