Broadcom wireless chips need firmware installed before they will work properly. Since it is considered to be proprietary, no distros include it, that I know of. Here is a link to instructions for installing it.

b43 - Linux Wireless

Some distros have b43-fwcutter available as a package, but I don't know about backtrack.

Broadcom wireless is supported in the Linux kernel, which Backtrack uses. You still need firmware installed for it to work.

It looks as if it is using the bcm43xx driver. This driver has been replaced by the b43 and b43legacy drivers. The Backtrack web site says that it is using the 2.6.21.5 kernel, so the b43 driver should be available. It needs firmware to work too.

Post the output of these commands.
Code:
lsmod
Code:
uname -r
Code:
dmesg | grep firmware
If backtrack does not support the b43 driver, then I would suggest using a Linux distro that does. The bcm43xx driver was so poor, using NDISwrapper with the WinXP driver was considered a better option.

OK, I wanted to see what you were talking about. So I downloaded Backtrack, and ran it on my laptop with a Broadcom wireless.

First, I have to say that the layout is similar to some older distros, Suse 10.0 or even 9.3 come to mind. And it is using the bcm43xx driver. I tried to load the b43 driver, but it failed. There does seem to be firmware for it too, so that's not the problem.

The trouble that I had seems to be with connecting to WPA encrypted connections. In "the old days" we used wpa_supplicant. When I tried to set it up using the terminal commands, it wouldn't accept "broadcom" as the driver, yet the man pages say it is an option. I believe that this is the stumbling block.

When I used to use wpa_supplicant, it was with NDISwrapper. As I said in my previous post, this was because of the poor performance of the bcm43xx driver.

I would say that you need to use NDISwrapper and the WinXP driver for your card, but I don't see anyway to add software to the system. To compile it, you would need the kernel source, and that is missing too. You would also have to set up the /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file for the network that you want to connect to. Then to get it working, use this command.
Code:
wpa_supplicant -Dndiswrapper -ieth1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
I think that you should just use a more wireless friendly distro. Ubuntu, Suse and Fedora are some that I have used, and I'm sure that there are others.

It's never a waste of time to help someone.

I just noticed something. When you tried to set the ESSID, you used eth0:
Code:
bt ~ # iwconfig eth0 essid ************
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device eth0 ; No such device.
bt ~ # iwconfig eth0
eth0 no wireless extensions.
Yet the wireless is eth1:
Code:
bt ~ # iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 IEEE 802.11b/g ESSID:off/any Nickname:"Broadcom 4311"
          Mode:Managed Frequency=2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:12:0E:6F:6A:EC
          Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=18 dBm
          RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
Link Quality=0/100 Signal level=-256 dBm Noise level=-256 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
Try it again using eth1 instead of eth0
