Hi linux gurus,
I've been browsing the web for steps regarding setting up the wireless on my laptop, but I think an intel driver needs to be installed first. Which I have no clue howto do. Also there is mention of updating the kernel??
Here are the outputs of the suggestion commands:

For some reason lspci -nn didn't print the information we're looking for. Try lspci -v. When you post the output of these commands, please wrap it in code tags. If you go into advanced mode, you can highlight the text and select the little # symbol.

Thanks, you are right...here is the output.
I have mentioned that I havent clue what to do...

- 04-07-2009 #4This is your wireless card, and it's pretty well supported in linux. I have the same card in my laptop. I realize I don't know what distro you're running though. From the output of uname, I'm guessing you have CentOS. Is this correct? Working on that assumptions, look here: How To Install Intel Pro Wireless 3945 On CentOS Linux | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials10:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02)
CentOS is probably not the most newbie friendly distro out there. Any particular reason you're using it? It's basically Red Hat Enterprise debranded. If you're looking for a general desktop solution, there are probably better options. Any recent release of Fedora, Ubuntu, openSuse, etc. have this card working out of the box. (Some, like Debian, require the firmware to be installed specifically, but the driver is available in all the modern kernels.)
- 04-07-2009 #5
Im using RHEL 4.
Would the howto for CentOs work for the Redhat as well?
Thanks
- 04-07-2009 #6
Yup, it should. CentOS and Red Hat are essentially identical. Though the how to is for a more recent version. It probably will work fine, still.
- 04-07-2009 #7
Thanks. But before I try it...just a question regarding
"yum install ipw3945d ipw3945-firmware dkms dkms-ipw3945 wpa_supplicant"
"yum install wpa_gui"
"yum install wpa_supplicant-gui"
I'm using wireless internet using windows, so I dont have any internet connection with linux...can I manually download this?
I downloaded this firmware http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/iw...e-2.14.1.5.tgz not sure if its the same...if not could you point to a manual download link other than using yum?
- 04-07-2009 #8
I believe you can find all the packages for download here: https://rpmrepo.org/RPMforge. You can download them to a usb drive or whatnot and transfer to your linux box. To install, you need to use the rpm tool. rpm
Note that the packages beginning with iwlwifi-3945-ucode is the newer firmware. For Red Hat 4, you need the ipw-* packages, as listed in the how to.
I gotta ask, is there a reason you're stuck with Red Hat 4? I really recommend upgrading to a newer distro.
- 04-07-2009 #9
Thanks alot for your help.
I will attempt your advice, but I'm currently running an application which is compatible with RHEL4.
- 04-07-2009 #10
What application? Seems unlikely that it can only run on RH4.
