I found this further down in the link above that you provided, Waterhead.

    Getting compat-wireless on Ubuntu

With Ubuntu you have the option of either installing compat-wireless yourself or of installing the package that provides it built by the Ubuntu kernel team. The Ubuntu package that carries compat-wireless is called linux-backport-modules and it has more backported modules than just your wireless subsystem. Its updated whenever major updates are pushed out into the wireless-testing git tree.

I went to the synaptic package manager and reinstalled the generic and then I installed the i386 drivers. I'll let you know what happens later. Thanks!!!

Below is the new dmesg minus the many fan notices:

I'm not sure what you are installing. What is the "generic" and the "i386" drivers?

I don't see any change. You are still getting the same errors.

You don't have to post the dmesg output everytime. I would be more interested in the output of iwconfig.

I went to the synaptic package manager and reinstalled the generic modules and then I installed the i386 drivers. Something is wrong though because my computer freezes up when I plug in the USB adapter.

In order to get the iwconfig file I went off line and plugged in the adapter. I went to the terminal and got this:

    cousinlucky@cousinlucky-desktop:~$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

    wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:""

    cousinlucky@cousinlucky-desktop:~$

When I unplugged the USB adapter my computer froze up and I had to remove the plug to shut off my computer and restart it.
