    5100AGN problems

    Hello all,

I've been working on this for a while. Here is what I think is the relevant portion of dmesg output:

[ 7.641647] iwlagn: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link AGN driver for Linux, 1.3.27ks
    [ 7.641650] iwlagn: Copyright(c) 2003-2008 Intel Corporation
    [ 7.641710] iwlagn 0000:0c:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
    [ 7.641719] iwlagn 0000:0c:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[ 7.641761] iwlagn: Detected Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100AGN REV=0x54
    [ 7.663840] iwlagn: Tunable channels: 13 802.11bg, 24 802.11a channels
    [ 7.687110] iwlagn 0000:0c:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
    [ 7.687228] input: PC Speaker as /devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input12
    [ 7.687581] wmaster0 (iwlagn): not using net_device_ops yet
    [ 7.687841] phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'iwl-agn-rs'
    [ 7.745293] i801_smbus 0000:00:1f.3: PCI INT B -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 18
    [ 7.811907] wlan0 (iwlagn): not using net_device_ops yet

This is on Debian Lenny with their latest experimental kernel:
    Linux graton 2.6.29-2-686-bigmem #1 SMP Sat May 30 01:27:14 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
The machine is a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.

As you can see, it recognizes the device and seems to know what to do with it. I found and installed the supposedly required firmware in /lib/firmware . I do not see, however, that it is being loaded. Now for the rest of "follow the stupid instructions, stupid:"

    graton# apt-get install wireless-tools
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
wireless-tools is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
    graton# modprobe iwlagn
    graton# iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

    wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:""
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Tx-Power=0 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
    Encryption key:off
    Power Management:off
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

    graton# ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
    graton# iwlist wlan0 ap
    graton#

The access point exists. I can connect to it under Windows XP (I will never, repeat, never be ready for Vista) or on my old laptop. So now what?

    Thanks!

I moved this post to it's own thread. It is against forum rules to tack your help request to someone else's. Especially when they are about different wireless chips!

I don't believe that Debian has a decent wireless connection manager. I recommend installing Wicd, then see if the problem still persists.

    wicd - home

    Sorry, Waterhead.

I was not seeing an option to start a new thread.

I am already using wicd. I will be less diplomatic about the network managers available for Debian and Ubuntu: they are complete garbage.

wicd fails to see any wireless networks.

Actually, the NetworkManager for Gnome and KNetworkManager for KDE are quite good. I did not know if they were available in Debian.

We should start from the beginning, with you providing all the information that you can. Read through the post linked to below. It describes how to find all the info we need, and post that info here.

    Oh, and more....

    graton# dmesg | grep firmware
    [ 3078.348197] iwlagn 0000:0c:00.0: firmware: requesting iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode

Ho, ho! I hadn't spotted this before. But what does reason -2 mean?

    and finally....

    graton# uname -r
    2.6.29-2-686-bigmem

So why does it want that file and not the one I got:

    graton# ls -al /lib/firmware
    total 888
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-06-03 21:02 .
    drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 4096 2009-06-03 14:13 ..
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 150860 2009-03-29 23:34 iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 187608 2009-03-29 23:34 iwlwifi-4965-1.ucode
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 187672 2009-03-29 23:34 iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 353240 2009-06-03 21:02 iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode

Or, if it really should have the file it is asking for, where do I find it rather than the one I found?

So I went back to the intellinuxwireless site (sorry, not only does this forum software not allow me to post urls--it really enforces this) , clicked on show older releases and found an older tar ball with the version of the file the message in dmesg is asking for. And I copied it in to /lib/firmware.

But is using an older version of the firmware what I really want to do?

Yes-sometimes the newer stuff is broken, so try the older one and see if it works. If it does you're golden. If not we'll have to investigate further.

The link-posting ban is to prevent spammers from registering and immediately posting spam. Sorry but it is needed. In fact it may get even stricter in the future!

I have found that the firmware tarballs are not really named according to the firmware that it contains. You may need to download and unpack several of the older versions before you find the version that you need.

I'm not completely sure what determines which firmware it needs. It most likely is the chip version and/or driver version. Fortunately Linux knows what it needs, you just have to provide it.
