I am at a loss to explain what happened. It is possible that you needed a different kernel, to match the wl kernel module. But it should still boot into the new kernel. Did you have a video driver from nVidia or ATI that you installed on the system? It would have to be reinstalled, if a new kernel was installed.
Hi Paul,

Its OK! I enjoyed re-nstalling & repartition my laptop again. And it was really a good learning experiene for me. Anyway, I had the openSUSE re-installed and will try to look also for other ways like mike tbob has given me a link. Please feel free to give also your comments and suggestions.

sincerely,

The Packman repository is an accepted, but unofficial, repository for Suse. You should add it to the YaST repository list.

Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE
http://opensuse-community.org/Package_Sources

You should be able to update and install packages from them. I would enable it before doing any updates, so that way you shouldn't get any package conflicts.

Hi Paul,

I hope its ok if I continue my inquiry re wireless (openSUSE) here since this is where I originally posted it before I decided to uninstall it. And now that I decided to install it again. I would like to ask for the indulgence of the admins for this cross posting. I hope its ok if I continue here Paul since this is also a wireless inquiry anyway.

I still have to get hold of an internet cable and get back to you with the results.

Thanks and have a relaxed weekend!

Sure, but please update us on the current state of things. Like, did you re-install, what distro, what kernel, did you update after install?

Hi Paul,

Thanks. Here is the latest situation:

1) I have made a fresh reinstall of the openSUSE 11.1 on my laptop partition.
2) I have done downloading your instructions in the previous message re packman repos and have not experienced a problem so far
3) I am now in the process of installing the broadcom-wl through the ONE Click installation at the upper right hand of the window.
4) The installation is taking time since it also downloaded open office stuffs etc?

Anyway, here are the other results of the terminal cammands ust in case you might be interested to check

I have not experienced a problem up to this point so I will be sending this ahead just in case it fails to restart after the update.

Hello Paul, I got this error message. The download is still going on.

Code:

Hello again Paul,

FYI, I cancelled the installation since I noticed that it was installing another kernel.

2.6.27.7_2.6.27.29-9.1_0.1.1.i586.

My present kernel is

2.6.27.7-9-default

Could this be the one that is causing the screw up?

Anyway, the installation of the broadcom-wl has also halted.

Upgrading the kernel usually isn't a bad thing, but I think that you had problems booting the last time you tried this. Other distros keep the old kernel around, in case of problems with the new one. Suse just seems to remove the old one.

It was updating because the package is made for a specific kernel, and yours didn't match. The packages listed on THIS PAGE only have the kernel module for the 2.6.27.19_3.2-6.pm.13.i586.rpm kernel, and that wasn't the one that it was installing.

At this point I suggest you download the driver source and compile it for your current kernel. You can get it from Broadcom:

Broadcom.com - 802.11 Linux STA driver

Before compiling a kernel module, you should install these things:

kernel source (must match current kernel version)
kernel headers (must match current kernel version)
gcc
make (may already be installed)

The names of the packages may be different. If you used the DVD to install Suse, they should be available from that. Otherwise, the Suse repository should have them.

Edit: The kernel source may be named kernel-devel.

It looks like you can get the needed packages from here:

Index of /distribution/11.1/repo/oss/suse/i586

The kernel-source version has a .1 at the end, so I hope it isn't too different than yours. At this point I would just download the needed packages and manually install them.

Hello Paul,

After I stopped the upgrade earlier, I made a reboot and have experienced the same problem

I have to make a "rescue" with a,live cd to bring everything back. Thank you for keeping up with me on this but I must confess I am a little discouraged with SUSE. I have read that this is a very stable distro but feel my experiences are telling me that I may not yet be prepared for this.

I will try to understand your advises above and will be getting back.

Again, thank you very much!
