I tried removing rt2860sta as you suggested, but no dice. Without rebooting the behavior is the same. After reboot the network manager doesn't show any wireless signal at all and the ra0 device is missing.
It seems that removing rt2860sta effectively disables ra0, which I guess was your intention. The problem is, wlan0 refers to my built in wireless card, which is (in my opinion) a piece of crap. It wouldn't work (well) in vista or linux with live cd, so I purchased a usb card and then a pci express card after deciding that usb was too inconvenient for long-term use.
I am guessing that if I am not able to use the pci express card with linux then I will not have wireless.
I am currently booting from the live cd to see if I can determine what is different about the configuration. I will let you know what I find out. Let me know if you have any other advice or thoughts in the meantime.
Thanks for all of your help so far!

Well now I can't seem to get wireless working from the live disc either... :/

Try the reverse. Remove the ath9k and load the rt2860sta module.
I have had very good experiences with Atheros wireless. The ath9k driver is fairly new, and installing the latest version of the drivers may be beneficial.Paul

I still say you should use the Atheros wireless, as that presents the best chance. I would install the latest drivers, downloaded from this site:
Download - Linux Wireless
You should use the stable compat-wireless release. This is the driver source code, and needs to be compiled. First you need these programs installed, they are available on the Ubuntu installation DVD or from the Ubuntu repository (if you have a wired internet connection).
linux-source
linux-headers-2.6.27.7-9-default
build-essential
First, I want you to try something. There seem to be some problems with the default NetworkManager network connection manager. Install Wicd instead, using the Synaptic Package Manager. It should uninstall NetworkManager when it installs Wicd. This too would be available from the installation DVD or the Ubuntu repositories.Last edited by waterhead; 08-21-2009 at 06:15 PM.
