One more thing to add.

It appears that the rt2800usb driver is not in the standard release of compat-wireless. It can be found by getting the source from the GIT development repository.

To recap:
You have two drivers that my work with this wireless. Both will have to be compiled from source.
Ralink RT2870STA
Rt2x00 rt2800usb (open source driver)
The rt2800usb driver is still in development stage, so maybe try the Ralink RT2870STA first. I will help you out in installing it, just ask.Paul

Hi, yes mate, I would like a little help with installation before I go completely crazy trying to learn commands. I see so many times ''order not found'' or ''no file or directory exists''. Every night my woman tells me ''leave it'', but I can't!!
Anyway....I downloaded RT2870STA (didnt understand why you write rt2x00 rt2800usb underneath) I've a lot to learn yet. I tried to uncompress it and-

But generally, you can just right click on the file and select extract from your file manager.

Hi again, thanks for quick reply.
Now, I just tried what you had typed for me and it still hasn't come up good. I have actually tried what you typed before, and it didn't come up then either. Now I start to wonder if the problem is with this laptop - hp dv5 it came with vista, and I took it off and put ubuntu on it. I want to learn to use the command line to extract because I want to learn the tricks in back track 3 and 4. and to do this I need to know how to extract etc. Also I've got a few iso's from other distros that do not support wireless that I've got, so it seems good to be able to extract from the terminal. Here again are the results from the terminal after typing what you wrote for me:
boo@boo-laptop:~$ dir

Please excuse the spanish words, but hope youre ok with it- Im a brit but live in spain normally, and my o.s. is in spanish! Thanks.

Well, I'm mostly guessing based on high school spanish 15 years ago, but my guess is you're not in the correct directory. You can find out where you are currently with pwd.
Either cd into the directory the file is in or use the full path to the file, ie, if you saved the file to ~/Downloads/ you can eitherorCode:cd ~/Downloads
(The ~ is a shortcut for the home directory of the current user.)Code:tar -xjfv ~/Downloads/2009_0820_RT2870_Linux_STA_V2.2.0.0.tar.bz2
- 08-28-2009 #18
Actually, I think I'm wrong. Since dir listed the file and defaults to the current directory, I believe. I've never actually used dir - as far as I know, it's sort of a convenience command for those switching from DOS/windows. ls is the normal command to list directory contents.
I think it may be a permissions problem. Does your user own the file? (Right click and select properties to check permissions.)
- 08-28-2009 #19Is this saying it's not a valid archive? Where did you get the file from?tar: 2009_0820_RT2870_Linux_STA_V2.2.0.0.tar.bz2: No se encuentra en el archivo
Tryand post the output.Code:file 2009_0820_RT2870_Linux_STA_V2.2.0.0.tar.bz2

incidently, these 3 files are in red:
2009_0525_RT3070_Linux_STA_v2.1.1.0.bz2
2009_0713_RT73_Linux_STA_Drv1.1.0.3.zip
2009_0820_RT2870_Linux_STA_V2.2.0.0.tar.bz2
I downloaded the files from the ralink site:
Ralink Technology: Linux
Any ideas? And I wonder why the color for them is bright red when I do ls command.
