I can't connect to Wifi using Fedora 10. Help please.

Hello guys,

I've bought a MSI wind netbook last week with the card RTL8187SE. I installed fedora 10 and did some updates and it was fine, but i cant detect any wireless connection. I tried to install the card driver using ndiswrapper, got some tutorials, and i followed this video on how to install driver using ndiswrapper.

hyyp://xxx.linuxjournal.com/content/how-install-and-use-ndiswrapper-video (change x to w, and y to t)

i think i installed the driver succesfully, but the problem now is i dont know how to configured the wireless thing. my school has a wifi with a key, i know the key and i want to connect to it, i tried to create a new wireless connection with the key, but when i try to connect, its always says on the status "connecting", and never connected.

Hmm, that looks ok. Have you tried connecting to any other networks? It may be having a problem with the encryption your school uses, which is probably WPA2.

You might also try replacing networkmanager with wicd. It sometimes works better.

In Fedora you need to configure the wireless card. Open the "Network" program from the menu. Click on the wireless to highlight it, and then click Edit.

Check the box for using NetworkManager and don't enable the wireless at boot. Use DHCP for the connection, and save the configuration. After re-boot, NetworkManager should be able to connect to wireless networks.

the key is 40-bit so do you think that it is a WEP key?

how should i configure the wireless connection? there's a lot of stuffs in creating wireless network in my network manager, wep/wpa, open/shared, index, and stuffs. so what should i do?

hello waterhead, the default setting uses network manager and disable the wireless at boot and its using DHCP.

btw, so i installed the driver successfully? i dont really know if i did it right.

thanks.

The wireless connection settings are determined by the Access Point/Router. When you click on the NetworkManager icon in the task bar it should show any available networks.

To see if the driver installed correctly, run these commands.
Code:
ifconfig
Code:
iwconfig
Code:
iwlist scan

This:
Code:
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:21:85:ED:08:A9
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:17 Memory:dfc00000-dfc04000
And this
Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.457 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Tx-Power:20 dBm Sensitivity=0/3
          RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
Is your wireless. It looks to be working perfectly.

This indicates that there are no wireless networks to connect to:
Code:
iwlist scan:

wlan0 No scan results
This sometimes is inaccurate.

It seems that the driver is installed, otherwise there would not be a wlan0 device. When you click on the NetworkManager icon (next to the Date/Time), does it list any networks? Do you know for sure that there is an available network?

Thanks waterhead.

there's a wifi connection in my school, but when i tried to do iwlist scan, it says no available network, but there is.
Code:
wlan0 No scan results
When i click NetworkManager icon, there's no list or wireless connection available, but actually there's wifi in my school with 40-bit key, but i know the key.

So what is the best way i can do so that i can connect to a wireless connection?

Thanks.
