Install WLAN USB Adapter

Hello,

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 and im new to linux. I bought a WLAN USB adapter, that came with an installation CD.

I can't figure out how to install it on my system.

I plug in the USB device, and nothing happens. So i plugged it into my XP laptop and it pop up and said RTL8187_Wireless recognized.

I can't get the cd to auto run.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums!

Any drivers found on a CD that came with the device are probably for Windows machines. Most linux drivers are found within the Linux kernel itself.

Included in that CD are Linux Kernel 2.6.x drivers.....

How do i install them?

How do i open a terminal on 9.04? I read how to do it on an older version of linux, but the format is different on 9.04 as the menus were different.

You should have an icon for opening a terminal in your panel, and there should be an entry for the terminal in your applications menu. I don't run Ubuntu, so can't say for sure that they are there, but they used to be in earlier versions.

...also, be sure to check within the folder once it's extracted for any ReadMe type files for special instructions about installing any drivers.

hey um thanks, i figured out how to run terminal, and saw my device was already recgonized, then i clicked on the connection at the top right, and it was already connect!!!!!!

I DIDNT KNOW THAT WAS THERE!!!!

All i had to do was put in the wep, im talking to you right now WIRELESS!!!

Can I ask how reliable is your wireless connection? I read that the Realtek chipset devices have drivers that are now in the later kernels. This includes the RTL_8187.

Just curious.
